Partners Since 2008

What Gemco Group was looking for.

Gemco is a premier Hawke’s Bay construction company with an outstanding reputation for being proactive, innovative and client-focused with proven experience in the delivery of complex multi-million dollar projects.

They have constructed most of the large and iconic buildings around the Hawke’s Bay region and have long-standing relationships with their clients.

In 2008, Gemco was looking for a digital partner who shared their drive and values and who had an understanding of, and connection with, how Gemco wanted to be perceived in the market at different stages in their 20 year journey.

We’re very proud to have partnered with them ever since.

Over the years

Always leading in the market.

Gemco has always been ahead of its competitors, consistently driving a best-in-class online experience that dates all the way back to 2008.

2009 - Flash Intro.

We delivered an handcrafted introduction (in Adobe Flash!) that captured the very heart of what Gemco was all about in 2009.

2016 - 'Next Level' Experience.

The goal was that the web visitor had a sense of what it felt like to be standing in the entrance of the MTG, or in the grandstand of the Regional Sports Park. We wanted people to feel like they were actually ‘there’. It was a next-level technical build with incredible results.

2025 - Refined Excellence.

After 20 years of delivering excellence in construction, Gemco doesn't need to shout from the rooftops, the work speaks for itself. The new website reflects Gemco's steadfast position as the industry leader in Hawke's Bay.

Technologically Advanced

Key areas of work in 2016.

The 2016 project was highly technical and required a lot of research, planning and expert execution from Mogul, Black Dog Design, and Indelible.

Design & UX.

  • We developed a comprehensive technical document showing the behaviour of the creative components within the site.
  • Using the motion of the scene, UI elements move into focus for the user to learn more about each project.
  • The piece-de-resistance was the fly-through video on the homepage that plays through as the user scrolls.
  • The video itself is a mashup of Gemco’s projects using drone, dolly and steadicam footage.

The Build.

  • Getting a video to scrub based on scroll position is no easy feat, and in the end, we had to render the video out at around 6fps into separate JPG’s and pass each one through the canvas element based on the scrolling position on the page.
  • As we had a lot of cutting-edge functionality on the site we made sure that we moved into prototyping as early as possible so we could test functionality throughout the project.

Project-Led

Key areas of work in 2025.

The 2024/25 project collab with Gemco, Black Dog Design, Indelible and Attn! Marketing had a very definite focus on the projects themselves.

Brand Refinement.

  • We wanted the website to be minimalistic, classy and professional to reflect Gemco as the established market leader. It was a deliberate shift away from it’s previous playful and experimental brand and website.
  • Working closely with Gemco, we explored different versions of the typography,  using various weights and heights to find the primary typeface for consistency across the website, including headings, sub-headings, and body copy.
  • The core brand colors remain black and red, but we lightened up the site and used white space to direct focus on the project photos themselves.

A Focus on the Projects.

  • The projects are a central focus and the photos are the heroes of the new website.
  • A new tagline was introduced to the brand – “BUILDING THE BEST”. It’s a simple, succinct and accurate statement that is 100% Gemco.
  • Gemco has an impressive portfolio of both older and new projects that showcases their talent and commitment to delivering quality outcomes for their clients, so we wanted to concentrate the work on them.

In the client's own words.

“We wanted a website that was clean, professional, and easy to navigate, something that reflects the quality of our work without overcomplicating the message. Mogul delivered on that brief. The new site showcases our projects with strong imagery and a simple layout that lets the work speak for itself. The process was straightforward, and the team worked with us to achieve the result we were after.”
